CLAY PROGRAM

From a lump of clay to a finished work of art

At Peter Kirk, every student gets the opportunity to experience the magic of creating with clay! Our PTSA-sponsored Clay Program gives students a true hands-on ceramics experience -- from shaping a project out of raw clay to glazing their creation and seeing how it transforms after firing in our very own kiln.

How it works

Each grade level creates a unique clay project designed especially for their age and abilities.

BUILD > FIRE > GLAZE > FIRE > TAKE HOME!

Students begin by learning basic hand-building techniques and creating their project from clay. Once the pieces are completely dry, they're fired in Peter Kirk's kiln. Students then return for a second session to glaze their creations before they head back into the kiln one final time.

The result? A one-of-a-kind ceramic artwork -- and an experience to look forward to year after year.

Six years of clay

Because students participate every year from kindergarten through 5th grade, their clay projects grow right along with them. Over six years at Peter Kirk, students have the opportunity to explore different techniques, build increasingly complex projects, and create a collection of ceramic keepsakes that capture their elementary school years.

Peter Kirk's Clay Program is funded by the PTSA and made possible by an incredible team of volunteers who prepare materials, teach clay-building and glazing sessions, and fire hundreds of student creations in our kiln each year.
